REVIEWS

Film Review Year Book 1996/7
Stuffed with period pop songs and lovingly photographed, Now and Then will either reduce you tointoxicated jelly or get up your nose.

Four childhood friends meet up after a gap of twenty years. The deal is to re-live their halcyon days of 1970 when they first experienced the bloom of puberty, discovered the importance of friendship and found out what a willy looked like. Throw in a subplot about a mysterious murder, lots of country lanes and even more golden oldies and you have Stand By Me with knobs on. Or, rather, without knobs.

Demi more produced this nostalgic wallow and also stars as one of the grown-up girls alongside Melanie Griffith, Rosie O'Donnell and Rita Wilson. It is the vibrant quartet of Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Gaby Hoffmann and newcomer Ashleigh Aston Moore, however, as the 12 year-old soul mates who bestow this film with any pedigree.

Whats The Blurb Say on The Back of The Video Box?
In the summer of 1970 four young girls breezed through heady days of padded bras, tell-all truth or dare sessions, cemetery seances and discovered what boys looked like naked. But it was also the year their childhood innocence was cracked by the reality of divorce and the eerie ghost of a 25 year old murder mystery and so faced that moment in life when you realise nothing will ever be the same again. That year they made a friendship pact that would last into adulthood. They pledged that no matter where, no matter when if one was in need of a friend they would all be there. Now reunited, more than 20 years later, it is hard to believe they ever had anything in common.
